 Our Mission:

The Mission of Cast Away Cancer is to enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors in recovery and their caregivers by introducing them to and supporting them in, the therapeutic meditative activity of fly-fishing; and to facilitate the adoption of fishing into their lifestyle changes, to reduce the stress of living with cancer.

Cast Away Cancer does this through workshops, classes, private instruction, volunteer experiences; and by providing access to fly-fishing equipment, lodging and fishing professionals. The program supports the long-term adoption of fishing activities by providing opportunities for members to fish with their peers and connect with nature.

How we came to be:

During his cancer journey, the late Author and NH Fishing Guide Paul VanderWende conceived of a program to bring cancer survivors together for one-on-one experiences fly-fishing in the great outdoors as a way to alleviate the stress of living with cancer; similar experiences were planned for caregivers. He called the program Cast Away Cancer and asked that it be continued after his passing. In the years since, a great deal of interest has been shown; Cast Away Cancer is now a Registered New Hampshire Non-Profit Corporation seeking 501(c)3 status. Cast Away Cancer plans to support its members in taking up fishing as part of their long term changes in lifestyle as Survivors in Recovery.
